Allison did it again!

Allison celebrates
In Tallinn, Estonia, Allison Shreeve has defended her world championship title for the third consecutive year. The 2005 and 2006 world champion put in her best performance yet, winning every race (11 in total) held during the week of 13th to 18th August, in very trying and varied conditions ranging from 10 to 27 knots. Full report: www.aus911.com/news.php

Sarah Hebert (photo: Naish Sails)
22-year old Sarah Hebert once again kicked into gear reacing into second place in Estonia. After 11 races with shifty wind conditions and rough seas, Sarah showed off her talent by keeping it all together and managing to stay on Allison Shreeves heels until the end of the competition. Sarah comments: "At 22 years I am very happy to be the Vice World Formula Champion!"
Shreeve had travelled to Estonia after switching from the RS:X class due to a disappointing performance in her final qualifying event. Being ranked No.11 in the world in the Olympic class was not enough for Shreeve to gain Olympic selection, so the obvious choice was to return to Formula windsurfing, despite minimal preparation. "I only had two weeks to prepare for the World Championships, and was quite concerned having not been on a Formula board since the world titles last year in Korea".
results:
1 SHREEVE Allison
2 HEBERT Sarah
3 PIETRASIK Agnieszka
4 DEMONT Morane
5 NIINEMETS Maarja
6 GERMANY Margit

QingDao International Regatta, China

Opening Ceremony, smoggy Quindao, Nikola

We spent another day waiting around for wind. Finally, on our last scheduled day of fleet racing we were sent out for our 12:00 start. On the way to the race course there was good wind but as we waited for the race to start, the wind quickly died. It completely disappeared and we were sent back to shore to wait. Luckily after an hour or so we were sent back out to race as the wind came upto 4-6 knots. Not much, but enough to get the necessary races off as we had only 4 races by then and needed 6 to complete the regatta and continue on with the medal race.

Although I did not have a good start in the first race, I sailed my best race so far. I finished 10th and was close to the leaders. My second race of the day I finished 16th, once again being in the midst of it all. I worked incredibly hard and was able to pass boards both upwind and downwind so I was happy with my performance. My sailing and confidence got better each race I did and I wished that I had more than 6 chances to race.

These light wind conditions are my most challenging because of my height and weight, but I came to this test-event to learn and come to terms with what I need to do to make myself a serious contender for 2008. I welcome the challenge and am excited to continue pushing myself to the limit. I finished 17th overall. Yesterday most of the medal races were sailed... and this time in15-20 knots. It was like a dream come true for Qingdao to have these wonderful conditions. Unfortunately for most of the sailors and the regatta, it was a day late... but at least we now know that it can get windy here. Congratulations to Bryony Shaw (GBR) who won the womens RSX event.

Tomorrow I fly to Beijing where I will spend 2 days checking out the sights before I fly back home! Nikola Girke

We were sailing at the venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Quindao is an hour flight from Beijing, a beautiful coastal town... of only 8 million! The Pre-Olympics were a test event for the organizing committee and the race committee for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Ghibaudo beats Jaggi in Turkey
Jaggi secures herself the 2007 Slalom Title

The 2007 Pegasus Airlines World Cup, Alacati, Turkey: Cesme provinces stylish coastal resort welcomed the PWA back after a joint sanctioned event with IFCA back in 2006. Now boasting full World Cup Status and impressive sponsors to boot, the stage was set for a fiesta of competition and music served parallel to the host nations Surf n Sound festival. The Womens event was always going to be billed as a mouth-watering match between Karin Jaggi (F2 / North) and the resurgent Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou). Jaggis last-gasp victory in Fuerteventura denied Ghibaudo the tour lead, but Ghibaudos lust for victory intensified after her performance in Sotavento to a totally new level. Ghibaudo and Jaggi were fairly equally matched for speed, but the clear difference was in the Frenchwomens starting skill.

If anyone thought Jaggi was letting someone else share the limelight they could not be further from the truth. This was evident as tension rose and Jaggi was forced to push the start, which resulted in two painful disqualifications. Ghibaudos superior timing earned her 9 victories from the 15 races completed against Jaggis uncharacteristically meager 3 bullets. The real excitement in womens slalom are the contenders of the future with many young and exciting names rising to the fore, plus a wealth of local talent in the fleet. It was also pleasure to see Verena Fauster (F2 / Gaastra) recover well from surgery early in the season to finish consistently high enough to claim third overall.

Turkish TV celebrity Cagla Kubat (Starboard / North) may well show at more PWA events after her impressive 4th place finish which was grafted through speed and cunning turning skill to entertain the excited local crowds. Ghibaudos victory here must have cut deep into Jaggi, but by the same token Jaggi will be amped-up and excited by the prospect of the 2008 season already. The Swiss multiple world champions second place here was enough to secure her the 2007 womens slalom title. She will lift that trophy at Sylt to mark an important leap forward for the womens sport.

Results:

  1. Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou)
  2. Karin Jaggi (F2 / North)
  3. Verena Fauster (F2 / Gaastra)
  4. Cagla Kubat (Starboard / North)
  5. Marta Hlavaty

In the mens competition Antoine Albeau (Starboard / NeilPryde) touched down in Turkey with the 2007 title already secured. The French all-round master of windsurfing had the luxury of a stress-free end-of-season wind-down in Alacati, yet still managed to coast to victory ahead of two legends in the sport - Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1 / North) and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails). Punta Abreojos- Baja Mexico Trip

I just returned from a week windsurf/surf trip way down south in Mexico at a little spot called Punta Abreojos. I caught a ton of perfect waves for both windsurfing and surfing. All along the shores are miles are perfect waves and side shore winds. Since I went with a bunch on surfers, when the wind picked up I was the only windsurfer out and had the waves all to myself. I had a really close call on the way home in the middle of the desert that left me in tears on the side of the road alone! You will have to visit my website blog for the whole story at www.tatianahoward.com.
Until the next adventure!

Starboard Diva Womens Camp - Bonaire

Its all action in Bonaire this week. Before the Prokids Freestyle Worlds got underway, the Bonaire crew held their regular Diva Womens Camp. The Divas were a combination of both locals and tourists, taking tothe water for the first time to become real honest to goodness windsurfers!

Many were inspired by their kids and all the action on the island in preparation for the ProKids Freestyle Worlds. Under the watchful eyes of windsurf Godfather Elvis Martinus, these ladies went from knowing little to sailing in footstraps and harnesses! With near perfect beginner conditions the women using classic beginner Starboard rigs learned the basics and quickly moved on to some skills that often takes most years to perfect. By the weeks end they were sailing across near the mangroves with the turtles. It was a magical week of windsurf excellence. (photos and summary courtesy of www.bonairecaribbean.com)
