Sylt: Event Summary & Nayra Interview

From September 20th through 30th the German Island of Westerland hosted its annual extravaganza for the masses of crowds at the town of Sylts Brandenburger Strand. Sylt 2007 was the final event of the season for the womens wave series. Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) won a career-first single elimination final and so with no further competition today she took the event title ahead of 2006 world champ Iballa Moreno (North).

Iballa Morenos second place finish here also awarded her a second successive wave sailing title which she proudly received on stage in front of a massive throng of onlookers at the famous Sylt end-of-event prize giving.

Summary: Cross-to cross-onshore wind from the left and punchy head high shore break waves had given the ladies the perfect canvass to showcase their skills. Right from the start it became clear that Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) was reveling in the conditions and that Steffi Wahl (F2 / Gaastra) would also be a threat. The early heats progressed without drama until Wahl caused a major upset when she defeated tour leader Daida Moreno (North) in round 2. Wahl displayed superior timing and rhythm to tear the chunky swell to pieces and take a critical victory to make the German crowds truly proud. The second round also saw Alonso take her first major scalp in the form of Karin Jaggi (F2 / North). Jaggi sailed to her normal high standards but on this occasion was simply outclassed by Alonso who looked untouchable with her aggressive approach.

To maximize time in the fading conditions, the organizers opted for a 4-women final between Junk Nagoshi (F2 /Simmer) - who had accounted for experienced competitor Anne-Marie Reichmann (Naish / Naish) in the semis - the 2006 world champion Iballa Moreno (North), Alonso, and local favorite Wahl. Alonso, aged 28, continued her good form in the final along with her fellow Gran Canarian rival Iballa Moreno. Wahl was also looking dangerous but like Nagoshi her work rate was lower, and after Moreno fell a couple of times it was not long before the onlookers were convinced they were seeing a well deserved victory. Alonsos vertical, destructive attack was unequalled and she took the win by a 6-1 verdict amongst the judges. (text: PWA/Mc Dowell)

Party!!! (all photos: PWA/John Carter)

Read here what Nayra had to say just after her victory in Sylt:

Your 1st place in Sylt was your dream come true. Did it give you a big boost of confidence?

For sure, it was something that I really needed. Competition is really hard, and sometimes you have just eight minutes to show what you can do. You make a mistake and you are out. But this time, with longer heats, I could really relax and concentrate on doing my best without fear of crashing and loosing time. Especially now, to know that if I do my best I could win, it motivates me a lot to carry on fighting!

Do you think your winning strategy will work in other places as well or was it just the right thing to do at the right time?

I think it was the right thing at the right time. I saw that the best bit was upwind and close to the jetties, so I tried to stay upwind more than to plane or anything. Maybe my mind-strategy was the right one for other conditions too, I was pretty calm. But lets see how it goes next time.

The event season is nearly over for this year. What are your goals for 2008?

I really want to go back to the top 4 ranking on the waves. I want to sail a lot, and have fun with it. I want to improve my freestyle and try to do good next year there too. So mainly just sail as much as possible, in the best conditions possible and improve.

As the "Blade-girl", can you share some riding tips with us?

Riding tips? Just keep trying... Go with the flow, and keep practicing. And about my sails, I love them! I am a girl and I dont like to sail with too much power on my hands, but I rig my sails with a lot of downhaul and that makes them perfect for me.

What was the first thing you thought after you won?

The first thing I thought was about all the people that are always there for me. How happy they would be? My boyfriend, family and friends and my sponsors (Severne, Fanatic, VW and Rip Curl). They have always been super supportive and always motivating me a lot and trying to make me more confident, so I thought that this was amazing for them.

Where will be find you next?

I was supposed to go on a quick trip holiday to Morocco tomorrow just to chill for a week but I am ill with temperature and my whole body aches, so I had to cancel. So my next stop I think it will be Maui at the end of the month. (interview: Severne sails)

The 2007 PWA Aloha Classic Has Been Postponed Until The 2008 Season

(press release) Originally scheduled for Nov 5-17th, the event has been withdrawn from the calendar due to difficulties in securing title sponsorship. Despite the very best efforts from both the PWA, and the local organizers, there was not enough time to source any alternative sponsors worthy of such a premium event. Further complications were also encountered due to a lack of rental housing available on the north shore since the Maui Countys crack down on transient vacation rentals. This scenario left many competitors and sponsors struggling to find suitable accommodation over the holding period. The good news is that discussions regarding an event for 2008 are already in an advanced stage to secure a true spectacle for next seasons conclusion to the wave sailing tour.

Until then the newest location on the PWA wave series in Tiree, Scotland, will have the honor of awarding the 2007 mens wave sailing trophys to the winners and the ladies will receive their silverware on Sunday at the current event in the North Sea resort of Sylt, Germany. With the 2007 seasons 3 new locations all looking promising for next year the 2008 calendar looks to be healthier than ever before for the sport and the riders who compete on the toughest tour on earth. /text; PWA / Brian McDowell)
