Nikola: "Happy Holidays!"

I wanted to write an update a while back but I have not actually had a single moment free... finally its Christmas and I am taking a few much needed days off. I have been in New Zealand since the middle of November, training starting immediately and well...now its already been 5 weeks. Each day over the last month, Takapuna Beach - where the RSX Worlds are this January, more and more windsurfers from around the globe show up, all coming down to train up for the last Olympic Qualifier.

We have had really great conditions, almost too good as its been somewhat windy and sunny for the most part. I competed in the New Zealand RSX Nationals that were held from December 13-16th. Generally a Kiwi only event, this year we had 35 competitors from all over the World. This made for really great racing and competition. It was my first time competing since August, so it was a really great opportunity to get the cobwebs out. Made plenty of mistakes throughout the series of 8 races, learning heaps each race and finished the regatta off with a few 6th place finishes.

I finished 14th overall, although I probably would've been in the top 10 had the race committee not scored me wrong for the first race and my two Z-flags which gave me an additional 14 points overall. I had never seen the Z-flag before, it's a flag that was never used in the 470 dinghy racing that I did. The Z-flag means that if you are over the starting line within one minute before the start, you have to return to the proper side of the starting line, but you carry a 20 percent penalty of the overall fleet size added to your race score. Unfortunately, getting 2 of those in one day did not help the results. But...better now than at the Worlds!

So, even with all my mistakes I ended up top Canadian and when I finally got my act together on the last day I was mixing it up with the best to finish with two 6ths. Along with my training partners, Romy Kinzl from Germany and Hayley Thom from New Zealand, we hired Aaron MacIntosh, a Kiwi windsurfing guru and Olympic medalist to coach us for 9 days. We spent 5-6 hours each day on the water, had lengthy debriefs and video-analysis. Apart from windsurfing, eating and sleeping....there was not much time for anything else. Coaching ended on the 23rd... its my first time in a few weeks to put my feet up and relax a bit, and finally an update. Training continues throughout the holidays as January 10th is approaching quickly.

All the very best for the holidays and thank you for your continued support!
Nikola

Jericoacoara

Emma Johansson in the waves /Anna Jonsson spocking

Me and Anna just came back home to Sweden after 2 great months in Jericoacoara, Brazil. It has been windy more or less the whole time, except from a few days the last week. In the beginning was it almost too much wind for freestyle as we where on 3.3 sails. In November the wind got a little bit lighter, but still strong enough for 3.7-4.2.

We decided to see a little bit more then just Jeri this time as it was the third time I visit Jeri, and second for Anna. So we went to two of the lagoons, Tatatjuba and Azul. Anna also went to Camocim for one day, superflat water perfect for freestyle.

It’s great to meet everybody who comes back to Jeri every year. More and more people decide to visit the village every year, but to live there is still pretty cheap. November was crowded on the water at the main break but definitely not only guys, I do nott think I have ever seen so many girls training at the same spot. The level was really high as well and some of the pwa riders where there training, such as Silvia Alba, Ivana Farias, Anna Jonsson, Vicky Sanchez and me Emma Johansson.

Dutch Wave Champion Femke van der Valk

A little bit late, but we still owe you this news...
.
Femke: "On 29th of October we had the Dutch Wave Championships at Wijk aan Zee; one of the top wave spots in Holland. To insure the correct conditions exist for a National Championship event here in the Netherlands, we now use a system of watching for the weather and calling for the event via broadcast email the day before. A perfect weather forecast held the promise of 20 knots projected for the day so everybody was excited for the event to happen and bring out the best sailors for high level action."

2012 Olympic Games with windsurfing/women

The ten sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games have been decided by the ISAF Council during the 2007 ISAF Annual Conference. ISAF President Goeran Petersson led the ISAF Council in over two hours of debate and discussion before the ten events were decided.

The final slate of events was voted on by the members of the ISAF Council, which is formed of the ISAF Executive Committee (elected for a four-year term in November 2004), 28 appointed members (representing each of the regional groups of sailing nations), and representatives of the Offshore Committee, ISAF Classes Committee and a Womens Representative. The selection of the ten events is subject to final confirmation from the International Olympic Committee. The ten events selected by the ISAF Council for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition are:

One person dinghy - Men
One person dinghy heavy - Men
Two person dinghy - Men
Two person dinghy high performance - Men
Windsurfer - Men
Keelboat - Men
One person dinghy - Women
Two person dinghy - Women
Keelboat match racing - Women
Windsurfer - Women

ISAF President Goeran Petersson said: "The selection of events for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition will have a significant impact on the sport around the world. Sailing has a long and glorious history as an Olympic sport and has been on every Olympic programme since 1908. The ten events chosen for the London Games provide a perfect showcase of the wide range and diversity of sailing. I am certain they will form the backbone of a terrific Olympic Sailing Competition in 2012." The ten sailing events at the 2012 London Olympic Games will be held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The equipment for the ten sailing events at the 2012 Games will be selected by the ISAF Council in November 2008. (source: internationalwindsurfing.com)

"Two against the sea"...

At the beginning of November, Libi Belozerzki, a brain-research student at Tel Aviv University, celebrated her 27th birthday. An observer might not have understood why the friends of the tall, smiling young woman were so moved. But they had good reason to be: Just a few weeks earlier, she had returned from a maritime adventure that had thrilled the local - and international - sailing community. For nine days she was swept along by the currents of the Indian Ocean on a small life raft, without food or means of communication, and with only small rations of water, until she was spotted by the crew of a tugboat, who took her aboard.
